Google Books - Scanning (Digitization) Project

Silkroad IT Ltd is part of the global team that plans to digitize over 100 million books for the Google Books project.  The goal is to get all known published books in digital format.  A lofty goal to say the least.  But Silkroad IT does not shy away from such an enormous task, in fact they embrace such task and enjoy being the world’s leading provider of digitization services.  At the Silkroad IT Facilities in Hyderabad, books arrive by the truckload, and the truckloads keep coming.  The trucks are offloaded into a sorting space where they books are categorized by hand and alphabetized according to author.  Then they are stacked in high piles to await transport to the scanning operators.  When you look across the floor of scanning operators there is a sea of them, each one carefully and diligently scanning page after page of the priceless record of humanity – which includes the sum total of all books that have been created since Gutenberg first invented the printing press in 1450.

Google hired Silkroad IT because so far it has only been able to achieve putting 12 million books online of the estimated 120 million in existence.  Silkroad IT is now working non-stop day and night to scan the books as fast as they can be delivered.  Google books is very satisfied with the progress and credits Silkroad IT for delivering on its contract to provide quality digitization services at affordable prices.  Silkroad IT will be processing millions of pages per month for the two year term of the existing contract.

The process is a multi-step process which begins with pre-processing, followed by scanning, indexing and finally post processing.  Silkroad IT uses the latest high-speed high-quality scanners, computers that interface with a massive data center of servers that are protected by an array of state-of-the-art power backup systems.

Books from all over the world are being scanned, not only the ones in the English language, but also books in any language.  Optical Character Recognition software is also used as part of the processing.  Quality control is being managed on multiple levels with a final quality control check performed by the client’s quality assurance team.

There are massive logistic issues that need to be managed in order to collect the books, transport them to India, process the scanning at the Hyderabad facility and then return the books to the original source.  Many libraries are letting their books be scanned  in exchange for future digitization services.  And all the copyrights of the book are being honored.  The job for Silkroad IT is to get the physically scanning of the books done in a timely and cost effective manner.  Google Books is in charge of all the issues regarding rights management.  As each truck pulls up to the Hyderabad facility, one after another Silkroad IT’s staff is very happy to receive them.

Central Government of India

Silkroad IT has made tremendous strides on the Central Government of India's Financial Sector's project in India. After signing a Digitization contract for 2 locations in India, Silkroad IT was given the green light to assist in digitizing India's Central Government Agency and assisting financial sector, with manpower requirements and digital conversion. The digitization is extremely important for India's residents. This agency offers insurance to poverty stricken classes in India and provides much needed financial coverage against death at an affordable cost. It is for this reason that Silkroad IT's digitization group has stepped into handle all of agency's digital requirements. Agency needed 200,000,000+ pages digitized by silkroad IT, and Silkroad IT's digitization group has devoted experienced staff, who will be working on this part of the project. Other aspects of the agency's project that Silkroad IT is taking on involve hiring the proper personnel, regulating payroll, and numerous other HR related issues. Hired personnel are taking charge of pre processing, document scanning, image enhancement, indexing and post processing. Silkroad IT's digitization group is well on their way to completing their goal of 200,000,000+ digitized documents for agency in a timely manner. To date, 75,000,000+ pages have been converted over into a digital format for the agency as of Oct 15th, 2009.

The Agency's Digitization project is very important on so many levels. The conversion of paper documents over to a digital format is enabling agency to have quicker, easier access to a client's file in case any changes in insurance policy are required. Documents are now available through an online network system that can be effortlessly accessed by employees for more efficient work output. This in turn directly benefits the client with quicker, more efficient service and keeps both parties very happy in a business that is so critical to meeting the life insurance needs of so many. Moreover, Silkroad IT's digitization group's audit program has been put into place to ensure that genuine information is converted over to a digital format. One of the most important ways Agency determines someone's premium under a  insurance policy is by age, and individuals have to provide proof of age through specific documents. If these documents are copied and filed away by agency in a paper format, the chances of finding a specific document by name to ensure age certification by hand becomes a long, painstaking process. Furthermore, copies of paper documents can also be destroyed in a fire or another type of natural disaster, where converting these documents over to a digital format prevents this from occurring. This would be disastrous for any company, but especially for this agency and their involvement within the larger community. Silkroad IT's digitization group is adding the necessary security and customized audit program required to protect such documents and keep them honest. The continuation and completion of the Agency's digitization project is one of the primary objectives of Silkroad IT and it's digitization group. Current indications show that the project is rolling along very smoothly, and there is no sign that Silkroad IT's digitization group is going to stop until the job is done to Agency's total satisfaction.
